The Institute for Family Medicine is an independent, organization of physicians and health care professionals 

who have, in lieu of other practice opportunities, chosen to dedicate their careers to providing medical care to

the poor, uninsured, and medically underserved. The focus of the organization is to improve access to quality

health care by "bringing care to the people" in their community, schools, and neighborhoods.

Summary: The physician is responsible for providing medical services to patients in practices managed by,

or contracted by the Institute for Family Medicine in a manner consistent with the community standards of care.

The provider also serves as liaison for clinical matters with medical providers outside the system and provides

on- call service as requested.

Responsibilities:
• Report to assigned facility at designated hour to perform designated duties
• Assume the role of primary care physician with the coordination of on and off site care needs of patient
• Consult with medical providers in the community to resolve issues in delivery services to patients
• Assist, as directed in supervising the clinical services provided by the professional staff
• Provide direct medical care to patients: interview and examine patients primarily in the clinic setting; analyze,

          diagnose and explain medical problems; recommend and explain appropriate diagnostic tests and treatment;

          perform specialized physical exams and treatment procedures; prescribe drugs and use of regulated medical

          devices; refer to medical specialists and other health professionals; instruct and educate patients in preventive

          health care; confer with patients to convey test results, chart patient encounters according to institutional

          standards and hear emergency complaints.
• Provide chart review and other quality assurance activities as indicated
• Utilize available in-house resource personnel for treatment or resolution of identified problems before

          utilizing off-site referral if appropriate
• Provide emergency treatment on-site and respond appropriately in urgent or emergency situations
• Assume responsibility and accountability for his/her individual judgment and actions.
• Utilize universal precautions when providing invasive procedures for diagnostic or routine studies or when handling specimens
• Maintain confidentiality and respect patient’s right to privacy, in accordance with accepted confidentiality practices
• Abide by the administrative and security regulations of the facility
• Meet clinical performance guidelines as directed
• Maintain all necessary professional licensure and registration and assist in maintaining credentialing and other

          professional financial arrangements as instructed by Institute administration
• Attend clinical and administrative meetings as requested by Institute administration
• Notify the indicated officer of the Institute of changes in scheduled coverage and assist in arrangement for coverage

          of medical services if unavailable for extended periods of time.
• Train and supervise medical students and residents engaged in specialty activities and procedures, as appropriate

          and as agreed upon by Institute administration. Provide formal and informal clinical instruction and supervision

          for medical, nursing and medical assistant students. Coordinate and monitor patient care by students.

          Prepare clinical evaluations as required.
• Keep up-to-date on relevant medical research and technology. Attend appropriate continuing medical education courses

          and various professional meetings and conferences, read journals, and so forth.


Administrative responsibilities include the following:
• Represent the Institute for Family Medicine in clinical situations and in relation to Institute collaborators
• Assist collaborating providers (i.e., nurse practitioners and physician assistants) in maintaining legal and

           quality guidelines and records in a timely and appropriate manner
• Monitor referrals to outside health care facilities for appropriateness, quality and continuity of care
• Is available for resolution of administrative/medical issues

 

Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily

Education/Experience:
• An MD or DO degree with the completion of an accredited three year internship and residency.
• Board certified or board eligible in chosen specialty
• Broad and in-depth technical knowledge and skills related to the practice of primary care medicine.
• Relevant experience in a primary care setting.
• Formal and informal teaching and supervisory skills
• Planning and administrative skills.
• License to Practice Medicine required
